A Virginia resident for nearly his entire life, James has enjoyed a widely varied music career. As a recording engineer and producer since 2004, James has established himself as one of the most prolific and awarded voices in contemporary a cappella production, with clients earning dozens of ‘Best of College A Cappella’ Album appearances and hundreds of Contemporary A Cappella Awards. He has also worked with Pentatonix, been on the soundtrack for the movie Pitch Perfect, and collaborated on Chinese pop star Momo Wu’s hit “Live For Now,” whose music video has over 200 million views. As a composer, Gammon’s original song “Toxie the Toxic Asset” was featured on NPR’s Planet Money, and he collaborated with Indian composer M. Ghibran in composing for the 2013 Bollywood film Vishwaroopam. His concert piece 'Overture For Orchestra' is being performed in Fall 2024 by the Old Dominion University Orchestra. As a performer, James has played keyboards with southern rock band Adam’s Plastic Pond and folk singer-songwriter Carl Anderson, and he sings baritone with the Virginia Consort. As a conductor and pianist, James has led and played in the pit orchestra for local productions of Les Miserables, Threepenny Opera, Crazy for You, and Seussical, among many others.
James comes from a musical family history; in the 1920s his maternal great-grandfather’s entire extended family worked together as a single silent movie orchestra. In grade school he was a proud band nerd, playing horn, trumpet, saxophone, and piano in orchestra, band, and jazz band. He attended the University of Virginia and sang with the Academical Village People singing group and studied classical composition with Carl Roskott, graduating magna cum laude in 2004 with a B.A. in Music and Philosophy. He lives in Crozet, Virginia with his wife, son, and two dogs.
